Their Story

Sakanaya Restaurant stands out on Green Street in every way. The face of the restaurant is covered in panels of flaxen wood straight from Korea – a dramatic contrast to the surrounding brick and cement, and the authentic Japanese menu is distinct among a sea of daily deals.

The owner is a U of I student that meticulously researched every detail of his ideal restaurant before opening in November 2013; from the eyedropper soy sauce bottles to the award-winning checkbooks that light up when diners are ready to go, the owner loves all things eye-catching and spent months traveling around Asia to find unique elements to add to the ambiance.

The name Sakanaya, which means “fish market” in Japanese is fitting because, according to the owner, they order more fish than just about any place in Champaign, and get first pick of the catch because of it.

Despite the fact that many of the entrees are more expensive than neighboring restaurants, there is often a line out the door of Sakanaya because the authentic ramen and thoughtful ambiance can’t be found anywhere else in Champaign-Urbana, let alone on Green Street.

Sakanaya does cater to the student population by staying open until 1am, serving a special late night menu that features fried chicken wings, ramen, sushi, hot sake and pitchers of Korean beer.

The chef, who has over 20 years of experience in Manhattan Japanese restaurants, has only revealed a portion of his menu, so even diners who have tried Sakanaya already should check in again to see what’s new!
